Behind the Brand: Mintie
I work with many great businesses to create each month’s box. One such business is Environmental Life who created the Mintie brand. You might remember them from the water bottle in our Summer Sun box and the handy little containers in our latest Foodie box. Vicki is co-founder of Environmental life and I’ve had such a great time working with her to get the products just right for the boxes. She has gone above and beyond to help me out so I caught up with her to find out a bit more about this wonderful brand and the lovely person behind it.
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself
Hello my name is Vic and I am the Co-Founder of Environmental Life and the Mintie Brand, I live and work in West Sussex with my family. I am a lucky mum of two springy children and have three busy chickens to keep me company. When I am not at Mintie HQ I work part-time at the University of Brighton in their student support services as a dyslexia screener. I love hanging out in nature, cooking, experimenting with growing veggies, doing yoga in my pyjamas and eating dark chocolate, but not usually at the same time!
2. When and why did you start Environmental Life?
My partner Dan and I set up Environmental Life just over a year and a half ago, we had started on a personal journey of reducing own waste at home which included plastic, food and general consumption of stuff. We were just learning about the hugely negative impact that plastic is having on our world and our ecosystems, both more widely in the environment and within the body too. It is my job to make lunch for all my family each day, including myself and was alarmed at how often I was replacing the plastic Tupperware boxes due to warping, breaking and smelling odd when heated or washed so decided to get some steel lunchboxes. We tried a few & when we couldn't find what we were looking for decided to give it a go ourselves... Mintie was born about four months later. We tested A LOT of products and after much trial and error came up with a lunchbox we liked and decided to see if others did too!
3. What is your favourite part about running your business?
My favourite part of running Mintie is getting to communicate with customers and stockists. I love chatting with people about their ideas and receiving feedback on our products. We are so fortunate to work with a wonderful bunch of stockists, it feels like a great community up and down the country who have the same passions to educate and provide products for people which have less of an impact on our world. I guess its the chance to reach out to people virtually or 'in real life’, share a common ethos and feel united with those making little changes in their lives that add up to driving bigger social change more generally.
4. What is your top 'Eco' tip? What would you tell someone just starting on their eco journey?
Oh, this is a great question! I think that when you are just starting on your eco journey the best advice I could give is to be kind to yourself and others. Make one small manageable change a step at a time. Take it slow and steady and you are more likely to form a habit which just becomes part of your routine. Don‘t worry if you don't always achieve what you are hoping for - some days stuff just happens, we are by no means a fully plastic-free household (yet!) sometimes budget and time do not allow for this but we are trying and I think that counts for a lot. In the words of my mum ‘do your best..and your best is good enough’. Make simple, slow, steady steps and don't worry if its a wiggly path getting there.
